Gilheaney’s lawyer asked for the 38-year-old not to be returned to jail to serve the unexpired portion of his sentence – but the plea fell on deaf ears and Gilheaney was sent back to jail.
His target was Goodell, who had been appointed in 1968 by Republican Gov. Nelson A. Rockefeller to fill out the unexpired term of Robert F. Kennedy, who had been assassinated.
Powell served three years of an unexpired term, was elected president in 1977 and held that post until he retired in 1997.
That unexpired term concluded in 2021 and he was unopposed in the ensuing election.
The seat being filled is the unexpired term City Councilor Sena Magill, who announced her intent to step down earlier this month.
