Eelgrass is a vital habitat for creatures such as seahorses and pipefish and a nursery for juvenile fish, but critically it is also a vast carbon sink.
In terms of real seahorses, the long-snouted and spiny creatures can be found along the north coast of Northern Ireland but not close to Belfast.

Knysna seahorses are endemic to the Garden route where they are only found in 3 estuaries, they are also the most threatened species of seahorse in the world and the first listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List in 2004.
One local group in Tennessee embarrassed the organization in 2021 by calling for a ban on a book about seahorses because the book was “too sexy.”
