“Back in the 1990s, European nuclear reprocessor sea discharged radioactivity was identified off north-east Alaska, making its way through the Arctic towards the Pacific Ocean,” said Deere Jones.
High levels of radioactivity (>5,000 cps*) were reported in drill holes AK23-112 and AK23-116.
Its radioactivity is extremely weak: it emits a very short-range beta electron and itself then changes into Helium-3.
That limit is six times less than the World Health Organization's limit for drinking water, which is at 10,000 Bq/L, a measure of radioactivity.
“The more neutrons that are leaked, the greater the amount of radioactivity created by the activation process of neutrons,” Ewing said.
