As some businesses and independent tax preparers make less than reputable claims and provide misleading information in anticipation of tax season, residents should do their homework and keep a close eye out for these kinds of deals and scams.

She said her organization has been reaching out to clients who filed before the IRS announcement, to help them make the change, and hoped paid tax preparers are doing the same.
Susan Harley, Congress Watch managing director at Public Citizen, said “we’re outgunned as far as money being spent, but we have the moral higher ground” in supporting the free-file program over third-party tax preparers.
The IRS this year is doing a much better job of responding to calls from preparers and filers.
