A panel of US regulatory advisers said phenylephrine, a main component of over-the-counter cold including some versions of Procter & Gamble Co.’s Nyquil, doesn’t actually work.
If the FDA follows through on the panel's recommendations, Johnson & Johnson, Bayer and other drugmakers could be required to pull their oral medications containing phenylephrine from store shelves.

It works in a similar way to phenylephrine, but is stronger and has an additional stimulant effect — so if you're tired and run down, it'll give you an energy boost (don't take this before bed).
The FDA has not asked pharmacies to remove the drugs, the Journal noted, but appears on track to ultimately remove phenylephrine from its list of approved medicines.
