Confidence among non-manufacturing companies was up 0.3 points to 52.1.

Investors had expected an uptick, but instead the manufacturing index fell for the second month, to 48.8, remaining in the contraction area below 50. The non-manufacturing PMI remained in expansion territory at 54.2 but also slowed more than expected.

Official data say the index measuring non-manufacturing commercial activities grew to 51.7 from August's 51. The composite index rose to 52 from 51.3.

On Thursday, ISM announced that its non-manufacturing (services) index declined to 52.7 in July, down from 53.9 in June.
