A volcano in southwest Iceland has erupted, spewing lava and smoke across a large area after weeks of intense earthquake activity, the country’s Meteorological Office has said.

However, the eruption and flow appeared to have ceased Thursday, although the lava field still glowed and authorities were wary of declaring the eruption over, the Icelandic Meteorological Office added.

Though the majority of the country is safe, a large swath of this peninsula was evacuated in November as the Icelandic Meteorological Office predicted an imminent eruption.
