BEIJING (Reuters) -China's export controls on some gallium and germanium products take effect on Tuesday, with traders braced for a drop in international supply in August and September while exporters sort out newly required permits.
BEIJING (Reuters) – U.S. semiconductor wafer maker AXT Inc said its Chinese subsidiary Beijing Tongmei had received initial export permits for shipping gallium arsenide and germanium substrates – compounds key to chipmaking – to certain customers.

But it was notable that the visit still coincided with the punitive action that China took against the U.S. by announcing the export restrictions on gallium and germanium products.
DeRocher said a stream of gallium ions used to cut up the enamel acted like a very tiny blade or scalpel.
It depends on how the export controls are implemented in practice, but in theory, China could cause a global shortage of gallium and prices to spike for whatever is available.
It did introduce export controls this month on gallium and germanium, two rare earth elements used in semiconductor manufacturing.
Last month, China retaliated against Western export controls with its own sweeping restrictions on gallium and germanium, two crucial chipmaking inputs.
