Colchester had a record level of fly-tipping last year, new figures reveal.
Critics say charging people to dispose of their large waste encourages fly-tipping, and is unfair during a cost-of-living crisis.
Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs figures reveal there were 4,704 fly-tipping incidents in Northumberland in the year to March 2022 – though this was down from 5,036 the year before.
Eight fly-tipping notices were given out, two of which lead to prosecutions and two prosecutions for dirty back gardens were given out.
“Fly-tips currently are stable, we haven’t seen an uplift in fly-tips, although we recognise we have fly-tipping at the ‘bring’ sites.
He said: "We have already paid several thousand pounds in the last six months or so to have all of the fly-tipping and rubbish cleared away from both buildings, so for this to continue happening is obviously hugely frustrating.
However, the land has been vacant for 35 years due to viability issues and ground conditions – and often attracts fly-tipping.
It was clear she had failed in her duty of care to make sure her waste was disposed of legally, resulting in the fly-tipping, the council said.
Local shop keepers who rarely see the police even when they are robbed, and residents fed up that too little is being done about fly-tipping.
