Australia’s eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said there had been a steady increase in cyberbullying reports to eSafety, particularly since the pandemic, rising from 338 in 2017 to 1828 in 2022.
In this month's budget, the government committed to raising the funding base of the eSafety Commissioner by $132.1m over four years because of a spike in cyberbullying and other forms on online attacks and abuse.
The previous Liberal government sidestepped many of those concerns by putting the eSafety Commissioner in charge of large swathes of internet regulation.
The warning comes as Crime Stoppers, NSW Police Force, eSafety Commissioner and the Australian Federal Police-led Australian Centre to Counter Child Exploitation have joined forces to raise awareness of the safety risks facing young people online.

"We're also hearing from community stakeholders that online abuse is ratcheting up as we approach the referendum," eSafety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant told AFP.
