Four years later, jurors in the trial of McClain and three other former political power players not only saw video of that and other conversations secretly recorded by a onetime ComEd executive — they saw evidence of that vast patronage system itself.
Hooker said he “couldn’t afford it,” referring to the cost of Doherty’s contract under his purview as senior vice president of external affairs at ComEd – the utility’s top internal lobbyist.
McClain’s closeness to Madigan will be a focal point for prosecutors, who need to prove the nexus between the speaker’s office and the benefits ComEd expected to draw from its largesse.
“Mike suggested a very sophisticated and extensive strategy of bringing in all the resources that ComEd could muster to try to lobby and defeat this bill,” Cotter said.
