Synodality, as numerous pundits have observed, is notoriously difficult to define and critics have suggested that such is the express intention, since a lack of clarity leaves the process open to greater manipulation.
Synodality, they said, “values the contribution all the baptized make, according to their respective vocations,” and thus “constitutes a true act of further reception of the Council.”
The work of this first session convened by the Pope, titled “For a Synodal Church: Communion, Participation, and Mission,” will run until Oct. 29. A second session of the Synod on Synodality is expected in October 2024 to “continue discernment.”
