Beth Holloway stared occasionally at van der Sloot but otherwise showed no obvious emotion.
In 2010, Van der Sloot claimed the $250,000 that had been awarded for the discovery of Holloway.
The indictment says van der Sloot demanded $25,000 from Holloway's parents in exchange for information on their daughter's whereabouts.
Then van der Sloot led Kelly to a location away from the hotel and changed his story about the night he had been with Natalee Holloway, prosecutors said.
The Peruvian Embassy in Washington mentioned in an announcement on Wednesday that Mr. Van der Sloot could be briefly handed over to the U.S. for prosecution within the Holloway case.

The Peruvian Embassy in Washington told The Associated Press the order allows for the temporary extradition of Dutchman Joran van der Sloot to be prosecuted for alleged extortion and wire fraud, charges stemming from the Holloway case.
Van der Sloot pleads guilty to the charges against him in Flores’ killing, including “qualified murder” and simple robbery, and says he’s “really sorry for what happened.”
While never charged with the disappearance of Holloway, van der Sloot, a Dutch citizen, has been accused of taking $25,000 in down payments from her family for the false location of her remains.
