CHISINAU: Police in Moldova kept several thousand demonstrators away from government buildings on Sunday (Mar 12) after officials warned of possible organised disorder at the protest, the latest of a series denouncing pro-European President Maia Sandu.

Moldovan President Maia Sandu shook up her government by appointing a top security adviser to be premier as the former Soviet republic bordering Ukraine confronts an increasingly perilous geopolitical environment.
Moldova was granted EU candidate country status along with Ukraine in June last year, which Sandu described at the time as "the light at the end of the tunnel".

On Monday, Moldovan President Maia Sandu accused Russia of plotting to overthrow her country's government and derail it from its EU accession path.
Sandu and other officials have suggested that Moldova should forge ahead with its EU membership bid and ignore separatist Transdniestria, much like Cyprus was allowed to join despite the Turkish occupation of its northern regions since the 1970s.
Sandu recalled that in 2022 the country faced an acute economic crisis.
