Despite a very similar origin and similar color pallet to Kang, Rama-Tut actually predated the conqueror's first appearance, and the two were initially meant to be separate characters.

For context, Rama-Tut is the persona Kang assumed when he traveled back in time to ancient Egypt and made himself a Pharoah.

However, the Swordsman sacrificed his life to save Mantis, as Kang was later apprehended by his future self, who had once again become Rama-Tut.

The reason they did so is that their leader believed this child was chosen by the gods to defeat the tyrannical rule of Pharaoh Rama-Tut.
