British Jewish actress Bel Powley will play Miep, Jewish actor will star as Otto and Billie Boullet will take on the role of the young diarist, Anne.
Her grandmother spoke Yiddish with a heavy Irish accent and Powley said that her partner’s Dutch grandmother hid Jews under their floorboards during the Holocaust.
“It’s not something you’d expect from a normal 20-something directionless party girl,” Bel Powley says of her “A Small Light” character, Miep Gies, who helped hide Anne Frank and her family from the Nazis in the 1940s.
"She always used to say this quote which was that anyone can -- whether you are a teenager or a housewife -- turn on a small light in a dark room," Powley said.
The couple met on the set of the 2017 film Mary Shelley, in which Booth played Percy Shelley and Powley played Claire Clairmont, Mary’s stepsister.
