Since there is more than one progestin-only pill on the market, it’s possible that Opill may not be the one your plan picks to cover, said Mara Gandal-Powers, director of birth control access at the National Women’s Law Center.
The daily contraceptive Opill, sold by Perrigo, was first approved for prescription use in 1973, and the over-the-counter approval allows people to obtain it without first seeing a healthcare provider.
With the approval, Opill becomes the first oral contraceptive pill available on an over-the-counter basis in the United States.
