Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa said last week they are tracking the spread and monitoring it closely.
“I extend my heartfelt appreciation to all those who have contributed to establishing this essential facility,” said Dr Matshidiso Moeti, WHO Regional Director for Africa.
Moeti said that the drivers of the continuing disease burden include the size of Nigeria’s population, making scaling up intervention challenging; suboptimal surveillance systems, which pick up less than 40 per cent of the country’s malaria data.
Moeti said there is the need for the continent to galvanize action and ensure that no child in Africa is lost to preventable and treatable diseases.

Moeti showed delight that member States are increasing the uptake of new tools and guidance recommended by WHO, resulting in early access to TB prevention and care and better outcomes.
With regard to checking the drug resistance, Moeti said that the organisation recently launched two strategies to support countries in the African continent in building a more resilient response to malaria.
