After months of speculation, Morris County Commissioner Tom Mastrangelo formally kicked off his campaign for State Senate today, challenging incumbent State Sen. Joe Pennacchio (R-Montville) for the Republican nomination in the 26th legislative district.

Mastrangelo said the issue has been appealed because it "raises an important and novel question of law and procedural fairness" that has never been addressed by an Ontario court.

Mastrangelo, whose brother-in-law, Jerry Speziale, was the Passaic County sheriff, is now challenging Pennacchio in the Senate primary.

The lone incumbent who always seemed to be in fine shape was Webber, who finished in first place in the 2021 primary and never came under serious fire from Team Mastrangelo.
