Lampedusa, only 70 miles from Africa, is familiar with similar emergency situations but such numbers are unprecedented and pose a real political threat to Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni’s government who promised tighter immigration controls.
The coast guard in Rome and in Lampedusa declined to immediately confirm details of the rescue, including the deaths.

The number of migrant landings on the island of Lampedusa in Italy rose again on Thursday after a short break that only lasted a few days.
“We know that dozens of boats are currently in danger off Lampedusa, but we cannot help,” the organization wrote on Twitter.
