Laffitte abused his position of power both as a bank executive and personal representative by extending Murdaugh hundreds of thousands of dollars of improperly documented loans and generous overdraft protection.
Laffitte has challenged his conviction, arguing in part that jurors were replaced improperly after several hours of deliberations.
Laffitte is appealing and has not been sentenced.
Laffitte, the former CEO of Palmetto State Bank, was convicted in November of financial fraud charges in connection to Murdaugh’s alleged white collar fraud schemes.
Once, Laffitte emailed Murdaugh that he was shuffling money to cover his loans: “Just need to get them caught up before examiners come in,” he wrote.
