Egypt openly backed the coup, Israel relied on al-Burhan for normalising relations, and the red carpet was rolled out in Istanbul for al-Burhan and Hemedti.
Gen. Mohamed Hamdan Dagalo, commonly known as Hemedti, is the leader of the RSF and has been the deputy of Sudan's ruling council since 2019.
Hemedti showed little tolerance for dissent.
In recent years, Hemedti has been invited to capitals around the world, including Moscow, Cairo and Abu Dhabi.
Ismaeil said he became a political adviser to the RSF because he's been following Hemedti since the revolution in Sudan in 2019 which resulted in the ousting of the autocratic former president, Omar al-Bashir.

That scenario needs to be prevented in a way that ensures the political and military calculations of Hemedti, Burhan, and their supporters change when serious negotiations to restore a civilian government resume.
The RSF is also believed to have good relations with Yemen, as Hemedti sent thousands of RSF mercenaries there to fight Iran-aligned Houthi fighters, allying with Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
Through this, Hemedti and his clique managed to build international influence, and to enrich themselves massively in the process.

Under international pressure, Burhan and Hemedti agreed last December to a with political parties and pro-democracy groups.
While Burhan signed the deal only under heavy external pressure, Hemedti championed it, due to clauses he saw as giving him autonomy from Burhan and the army.
