Bears quarterback Justin Fields with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy during the game against the Packers on Sept. 10, 2023, at Soldier Field.
Chicago Bears offensive coordinator Luke Getsy watches practice on June 7, 2023, during organized team activities at Halas Hall.
Chicago has tons of cap space, and appreciation of his game because of Luke Getsy – unless some other team really overpays.
Getsy doesn’t want to put limitations on what Fields can accomplish with his strength, speed and innate awareness of where defenders are.
Getsy must guide him forward, and this is the first time he has been in charge of that in the NFL.
Getsy, though, could get a good look at a backup quarterback for Justin Fields.
Herbert managed just 2 yards on the next play, but at least Getsy seems to understand how important it is to churn clock when the defense is having such a tough time getting off the field.
In his second stint, Getsy served as Rodgers’ position coach.
“I would assume he has a legitimate chance,” Getsy said.

That one was hard to explain, but Getsy tried by saying the Bears missed “probably seven or eight” plays that could’ve been explosive game-changers if not for subtle errors.
That said, he knows the system having worked with offensive coordinator Luke Getsy in Green Bay, and that is a factor when you talk about qualities desired in a backup.
“To say there’s a target, that makes it very specific,” Getsy said.
