After the Kherson pullout, Prigozhin, a fierce critic of Gerasimov and Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu, praised Surovikin as "a man who is not afraid of responsibility".
Chief of the General Staff Valery Gerasimov and Deputy Defence Minister Yunus-bek Yevkurov are also feared missing in action.
General Gerasimov will be in charge of a grinding war against an army supported by the world’s most advanced militaries and capable of dealing painful and embarrassing defeats to Russia.

Gerasimov “needs some kind of win or a career ends in ignominy.
He said in a raised voice that defence minister Sergei Shoigu and chief of general staff Valery Gerasimov are handing out orders “left and right” not to supply Wagner with ammunition and not to support it with air transport.
He was after Shoigu, and Gerasimov.
Hours before releasing the statement, Mr Prigozhin’s spokespeople published a video of him angrily demanding ammunition from Russian defence minister Sergei Shoigu and general staff chief Valery Gerasimov.
In one extraordinary video, he shouted and cursed at Shoigu and Gerasimov, demanding ammunition so his men could keep fighting as he stood in a field littered with the corpses of Wagner fighters.
Mr Prigozhin claimed that the uprising was not aimed at Mr Putin but at removing Mr Gerasimov and other top brass who he claimed were mismanaging the war in Ukraine.

The Kremlin said that Mr. Putin listened to reports from Valery Gerasimov, the commander in charge of Moscow’s operations in Ukraine, and other top military brass at the headquarters of Russia’s Southern Military District.
The story goes on to say that Gerasimov has been replaced by Colonel-General Mikhail Teplinskiy.
