The Deir Ezzor province is partially controlled by the Syrian government.
The Syrian government is desperate in particular to wrest back control of Arab-majority Deir Ezzor, which is home to 70% of the country’s oil wealth, amid ongoing protests over fuel hikes and and neighboring Daraa, which are under its control.
