During Sunday’s commemoration ceremony Trudeau noted the presence of Elghawaby, describing her a “friend to all Canadians.”

Elghawaby graduated from the School of Journalism at Carleton University in Canada, and worked briefly for CBC in Ottawa after her graduation, and currently contributes a freelance column to the “Toronto Star” newspaper.

Elghawaby was accused of promoting “anti-Quebec sentiment” for a column she co-authored in 2019 in which she argued that Quebec supporters of are swayed by Islamophobia.
In January, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau appointed journalist and human rights advocate Amira Elghawaby as Canada’s first special representative to combat Islamophobia.
Parti Québécois MNA Joël Arseneau on Monday blamed Trudeau for causing the controversy by naming Elghawaby to the job.
